Discipline Vs. Grace

I woke up at 5 AM yesterday and killed the day. Today, I woke up at 5 AM and after an hour, went right back to sleep. The thing is I've always had a hard time with being Disciplined while giving myself Grace at the same time. I innately lean towards discipline over grace which means I can push myself too hard sometimes. I may get a lot of things done but in my unhealthy state, I always want to do more so I am never satisfied. Even though I killed it yesterday, my whole day is darkened by the fact that I failed to be disciplined today.

I believe we all lean towards one paradigm over the other. From my experience, I have seen both be very unhealthy and very healthy if utilized right.

Benefits of Discipline

  1. You can get things done!
  2. You are scheduled

Drawbacks of Discipline

  1. You tend to find value in what you do.
  2. You can get down on yourself if you fail to be disciplined

Benefits of Grace

  1.  You don't find your value in the things you do
  2. You don't put too much pressure on yourself

Drawbacks of Grace

  1. You can give yourself so much Grace that you can lean towards laziness

Both Paradigms have their strengths and weaknesses. Now, I set strict goals like a disciplined person would do, but I try not to get down on myself when I fail to be disciplined by reminding myself that my value is not found in myself but in God. This simple reminder is something I have to speak over my life almost every day.

Do you lean towards discipline or Grace?
