Walking in the Rain

Jesus was very close to one family. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were all siblings that were faithful to Jesus. As Jesus was doing ministry one day, he received a message from Mary about his friend; her brother speaking: “Lord, the one you love is sick.” Jesus immediately headed towards Jerusalem, knowing that it was a death trap as the officials planned to murder him if he stepped foot in Jerusalem. As Jesus rushes back, you could imagine the emotions he is feeling as he knows his dear friend was on his death bed. As he comes upon the grave of Lazarus, Mary falls at his feet in sheer sadness. It is here that “Jesus Wept”. Jesus mourns with his friends not because he cannot raise Lazarus from the dead (Which he ends up doing) but because the hearts of Mary and Martha were broken.

What’s the lesson?

Even if we attain the best combination of words that could miraculously heal our friends broken heart, sometimes the best move is to keep our mouths closed. In many cases, just sitting and crying, mourning with those we love, is the best action. This is called emotional intelligence: to have the human understanding to know what our friends need, even if it doesn’t make logical sense.

Sometimes it is better to walk in the rain with our mourning friends instead of automatically bringing out the umbrella.
