Thanksgiving Trip- Day 1

From Saturday, November 17th, to Saturday, November 24th, I will be with my beloved family in Ohio. Here is something I learned from Day 1.

It is wonderful etiquette to not talk to the person next to you on the airplane unless spoken to first: This is what I subconsciously learned somewhere. As I first sit on the 3 1/2 hour flight from San Diego to Cleveland, I pleasantly say hello to both of my neighbors. This was the case due to the fact that I had seat F, which of course is the hated middle seat. As I put my Air-pods in my ears, I close my eyes and dream of a day when I can actually a afford a window seat.

During my light slumber, I wake up with the sudden urge to go to the bathroom. I initiate the awkward exchange with my gatekeeper neighbor in order to allow me to relieve myself; she pleasantly agreed. On my way back I get the annoying urge that I should make conversation with the gatekeeper. As I come back I reluctantly ask about what she is reading, in spite the fact that I had a rule in place that would give me the freedom to not talk to this stranger. To the complete surprise of myself, this sparked a 20 minute conversation on the need to enlighten the young generation on generosity. To be honest, I had no idea how we got there, but it was wonderful.

Sometimes the thing we most not want to do is the thing we probably should do. There was no real reason I couldn’t spark a conversation with my seat neighbor besides my own fear of rejection.

What small fear are you giving into?
